Many people dread this time of year when we “spring forward” because it means one less hour of sleep. But I like to see it as an opportunity to kickstart a healthier fitness routine.
Did you realize the sunlight has a big impact on our bodies? There are two hormones that control mood and energy: Serotonin and Melatonin. Serotonin will help boost our mood and energy levels while melatonin will tend to make us feel sleepy. Too much of it can even lead to depression in some people. Winter depression is a common disorder and oftentimes tied to the effect of less daylight, less serotonin, and too much melatonin.
When there’s an abundance of sunlight, you will produce more serotonin and less melatonin. When sunlight is less available, you will produce less serotonin and more melatonin. The result of this can cause a dramatic shift in your overall feelings of well-being and energy; you will even find you have more energy and motivation when the days begin to lengthen.
