Clean your indoor air with Houseplants?

I’m working on cleaning up the air around me and found through NASA scientific research houseplants that are beneficial for clean air. Apparently the research was undertaken to help plan space station habitats.

First and foremost all indoor plants (flowering or not) are able to purify indoor air to some degree through normal photosynthesis processes. But some were found to be more beneficial than others in removing harmful household toxins (up to 90% of chemicals in the air in only 24 hours!)

The three main household toxins we fight are:

  • Benzene
  • Formaldehyde
  • Trichloroethylene

These chemicals are used in the manufacturing of synthetic substances and materials and are off-gases from new materials for some time (up to several years). To help decrease your risk of cancers, asthma, allergies, auto-immune disorders and other diseases here is a list of household plants to help clean the air.

Below are some of the houseplants recommended that may decrease your risk of cancers, asthma, allergies, and auto-immune disorders.

aloevera

1: Aloe Vera

Not only used for burns on the skin, it also removes formaldehyde from the air.

Palm

2: Areca Palm

General air purifier, especially as it grows larger. It’s known for being one of the better performers in purifying the air.

rubber

3:  Baby Rubber Plant
The Baby Rubber Plant cleans the air by emitting high oxygen content, and purifies indoor air by removing chemicals such as formaldehyde or other toxins.

Palm

4: Bamboo Palm or Reed Palm

According to NASA, it removes formaldehyde and is also said to act as a natural humidifier.

Fern

5: Boston Fern

Acts as a natural air humidifier, removes formaldehyde and is a general air purifier. Said to be among the best in air purifying houseplants.

Ivy

6: English Ivy

Known for removing the chemical benzene, a known carcinogen found in cigarette smoke, detergents, pesticides, and the off-gazing of other synthetic materials, is said to be fantastic for asthma and allergies and also removes formaldehyde.

Spider

7: Spider Plant

NASA placed this pant among the top 3 types of houseplants that are great at removing formaldehyde. Also removes carbon monoxide and other toxins or impurities.
